• That Slapstick Show! Presents: The Dogville Comedies

    Event

  • It was one of the most controversial comedy series during the early days when talking pictures took Hollywood by storm. The brainchild from comedy creators, Zion Myers and Three Stooges director, Jules White. The result was The Dogville comedies (originally known as All - Barkies) that featured an entire cast of lovable canines. Released by the mighty Metro Goldwyn Mayer, the series ran from 1929 through 1931 for their newly established short subjects unit.

The Dogville shorts spoofed some of the most popular stars and biggest movies of the day which not only delighted depression era moviegoers,  but theater exhibitors as well. A 1930 movie theater  exhibitors poll had the Dogvilles the most popular series of short subjects over the likes of Laurel And Hardy, Mickey Mouse for example.  A total of nine shorts were produced.

In the Dogville shorts , nothing was safe. This special Slapstick Show edition,  will give a very rare public showing of these two reelers. Host Nelson Hughes and Co - Host Tommy Jose Stathes will carefully examine the series' controversies and to put them into their proper historical context for modern day audiences.
