In this talk, Marie Carter, author of Mortimer and the Witches, will take you on a journey back in time to learn about the women who were considered “witches” in pre-twentieth century New York. Learn about New York City’s only witch trial, and the witches who inhabited Broome Street (no joke here) and many other enclaves of downtown. These women were fortunetellers, and their practice allowed them to make money and maintain autonomy in their business practices. In this talk, you’ll become acquainted with the methods and lifestyles of these infamous “witches” and the men who tried to expose their supposedly sordid practice.
