Who in the world is Wanda Wiley? During the 1920s, Wanda Wiley (1902- 1987) was a silent comedy film favorite of American moviegoers and theater exhibitors alike. Dubbed "The New Queen of the Comedy Screen" by Universal Studio executives, her fiercely fast-paced slapstick style solidified her place in the industry. Sadly, the majority of her film work no longer survives, and she is mostly forgotten.
As more of Wanda's films resurface across the globe, her work becomes easier to properly study and appreciate. Silent comedy curator Nelson Hughes' That Slapstick Show! returns to Astoria's Q.E.D for a warm tribute to Wiley's talents and career. All films to be shown are courtesy of the Library of Congress, and have not been seen by general audiences for nearly a century—until now! These silent cinema rarities will feature live musical accompaniment by Queens-based ragtime pianist Charlie Judkins. Don't miss out on this very special (and funny) retrospective!
