I was born in 1977. I was raised in West Virginia not far from Gettysburg and Harper’s Ferry. Needless to say, these areas take their history very seriously. As a child being towed around from one historical sight to the next, I remember not understanding how all these places fit together. It wasn’t until I moved to New York to attend The Cooper Union that my sense of history began to solidify. I began trying to reconcile the slippage between historical images and historical events. My work centered on trying to resolve these incongruities. Four years later, I found myself at Yale University still struggling with these questions. It was there that I finally realized, the work should celebrate these problems, not try to solve them. I finally freed myself to make work about not understanding how everything fits together, and to delight in the failure.
